Dental Sealants

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are an excellent solution to protect the teeth that have been subject to dental decay. At LiveWell dentistry, we aim to help you fix any tooth damage and reveal shining, bright teeth.

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic-like coating that is applied on top of your molars, premolars, or any deep grooves of the teeth. We often hear advice to brush and floss our teeth every day, but it is not possible to access every corner of the mouth thoroughly.

Don't settle with dental decay, there are solutions.

The molars and premolars in our mouth are especially prone to storing leftover food particles. These particles settle into the deep grooves in the teeth and produce certain acids that create holes called cavities. Over time, this can cause dental decay and become very painful.

As these are the teeth that can develop pits and fissures, a majority of the known dental decay occurs in these teeth. A sealant will help you keep these grooves protected, also making it easier to clean your teeth.

Are sealants suitable for all ages?

People of all ages are prone to developing tooth decay and cavities, especially if their teeth are not well taken care of. Babies can develop cavities if their teeth have deep grooves. The food settles in these depressions and can cause damage over time.

In children and teenagers, the individual is prone to developing cavities as soon as the molars appear, at around age six. The next set of molars start to appear around age 12, and it is advisable to carry out regular dental visits during this age in order to treat cavities with sealants before the tooth decay progresses.

Adults are also equally prone to developing cavities, especially as a result of poor dental hygiene or teeth sensitivity. Sealants are the best long-term solution and must be sought after as soon as you notice these cavities.

How are sealants applied?

At LiveWell Dentistry, our dental experts use easy and specialized techniques to treat cavities with the help of sealants effectively. The entire process of applying sealants takes only a few minutes for each tooth.
First, our dentists will thoroughly cleanse the teeth and surround the area around the teeth with cotton to help keep the mouth dry. Next, a solution is applied onto the tooth enamel surface in order to help the sealant attach itself to the teeth. After this, the teeth are rinsed and dried. The final sealant material is carefully applied onto the enamel surface by our dental expert, and this will effectively cover the deep grooves in the teeth. The sealant is then hardened by letting it dry normally or with the help of a special curing light.
